Superintendent of Public Works
The Village of Lancaster is accepting applications for the full-time position of Superintendent of Public Works. Daily responsibilities will include planning, organizing, and supervising the activities of the Department of Public Works, including street, sewer line maintenance and repair, shade tree maintenance, municipal lighting, snow removal, and other activities as required. This person is responsible for maintenance and supervision of the use of buildings, properties, material apparatus and equipment used and under the control of the department. Also prepares budget estimates for activities of the Department of Public Works, administers the expenditure of funds appropriated for the department, manages all personnel actions within the departments including assignments, recommendations, and administration of union contracts. This person must be available for emergency calls as needed, supervises maintenance of all department records, supervises ordering of materials, and develops contracts and equipment specifications for review by the Village Board. This person represents the Village in activities with consultants, contractors, and other parties and attends regular Village Board meetings on a regular basis and other meetings as needed.
Minimum qualifications require A) a 2-year college diploma in construction or engineering technology or related field and three (3) years of experience in highway maintenance, sanitary and storm sewer maintenance or engineering, or B) a high school diploma with five (5) years of experience in these same fields as stated above including a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience, or C) a combination thereof. Knowledge of construction, repair and maintenance of streets, municipal facilities, sanitary and storm water systems is essential to this position. Eligible candidates must also possess the ability to communicate with a large group of diverse individuals and the skills to manage the needs of the Village with other department heads and the Village Board. Must also demonstrate the ability to deal effectively with the public using good judgment, reliability, and initiative.
This person will be hired as a provisional employee in accordance with Civil Service Rules and Regulations. The successful candidate will be required to apply for the next Civil Service exam for this position when held by Erie County. Employee must successfully pass this exam and score in the top 3 positions on the List of Eligibles in accordance with Civil Service regulations to be appointed to this position on a permanent basis. Salary range is $75,000 – $90,000 annually and will be determined based on experience. Hours will be based on the needs of the Department. Regular hours for Department of Public Works offices are Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.
