Sustainability / Community Climate Energy Coordinator

The Village of Lancaster is seeking applicants for a Sustainability / Community Climate Energy Coordinator. The successful applicant will play an instrumental role in our sustainability and resilience work, which includes implementing our Climate Smart Communities awarded grant project for a community-wide Greenhouse Gas Inventory for the Village and Town of Lancaster along with a Climate Action Plan for Village operations. This position will assist the Village of Lancaster and its surrounding community with increasing their resiliency through planning, policy adoption, and project implementation and includes participation in the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Climate Smart Communities program and the NYS Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Clean Energy Communities program.

Duties as a Sustainability / Climate Energy Coordinator will include conducting community outreach activities and providing technical assistance related to climate action planning, clean energy projects, and resilience. These duties will include:

  • Assisting the Village of Lancaster with understanding and completing the required actions to become NYS DEC “Climate Smart Communities” Silver certified and NYSERDA “Clean Energy Communities” designated.
  • Assist the Village of Lancaster in completing local greenhouse gas emissions inventories, benchmarking the energy use of municipal buildings, and assisting communities in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency upgrades and renewable energy projects.
  • Support the Village’s Climate Smart Task Force with community campaigns that promote community-wide embrace of climate action planning and policies.
  • Assist the Village in increasing the deployment of alternative fuel vehicles and associated fueling infrastructure.
  • Conduct local on-site and virtual training and workshops to groups of interested local officials and community stakeholders on various sustainability and resilience-related topics.
  • Identify and connect communities with relevant sustainability, clean energy, and resilience programs and grant opportunities.
  • Complete research / activities on other issues related to sustainability and resilience as directed by Village officials.

This person will be hired as a provisional employee in accordance with Civil Service Rules and Regulations. The successful candidate will be required to apply for the next Civil Service exam for this position when this exam is held by Erie County. The selected person must successfully pass this exam and score in the top 3 positions on the List of Eligibles in accordance with Civil Service regulations to be appointed to this position on a permanent basis.

Salary for this full-time position is $65,000 with fringe benefits including health insurance, holidays, and paid time off. This position is funded for a 2-year term through a NYS Climate Smart Communities grant award, and continued employment beyond this initial term will be dependent on Village funding.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in urban planning, sustainability, architecture, environmental science or a related field. Some experience in sustainability/energy planning preferred, but not required.
  • Must be knowledgeable about climate action planning, clean energy, local government operations in New York State.
  • Must have strong writing, project management, and public speaking skills.
