Report: Giant Hogweed in Como Park

Village of Lancaster residents, neighbors, and visitors — please be alert: Giant Hogweed has been observed in Como Park. One confirmed location is along the creek bank below the sledding hill, though it may be present elsewhere in the park.
This invasive plant poses a serious risk to both people and pets — its sap can cause severe skin irritation and even burns. At this time, the best course of action is to stay away from the area where it was seen. Stick to marked paths and avoid brush and tall grasses, to avoid accidental contact with the plant.
While Como Park is not under the Village of Lancaster’s jurisdiction, many of our residents use the park regularly, and we want to ensure everyone stays safe and informed. The sightings have been reported to NYS DEC and Erie County Parks & Recreation.
