Roundabouts Project
Project Information
The Downtown Lancaster Roundabouts project is underway! The project will replace the signalized intersections at Central Avenue/Pleasant Avenue West and North Aurora Street/Pleasant Avenue West with landscaped roundabouts. These new intersection treatments will provide slower but more efficient traffic flow, reduce delay and emissions, while improving pedestrian safety and advancing downtown revitalization efforts. The project will also include “Complete Street” features along Pleasant Avenue to better serve pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users.
A series of public engagement events were held to inform the community about the project and gather input for consideration in the final design. Design work is now underway with another public information event planned for later in 2021. The final design will then be completed in the fall of 2021, with construction anticipated to start in early 2022.
Project Facts:
- Funding for the project is provided by the Federal Highway Administration Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) program and a grant from New York State.
- Roundabouts are the preferred alternative to signalized intersections as they reduce crash severity and intersection delay.
- Roundabouts improve pedestrian safety as pedestrians need to watch only one direction of traffic at a time. The slow speeds of roundabouts also allow drivers and pedestrians more time to react to one another.
- Complete Streets include accommodations for all users of the roadway, including pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and automobiles.
