Central Ave Improvements

 Project Information

The Central Ave Improvement Project planning stages are underway!

Project Overview:

In 2024, the Village of Lancaster was awarded $3.4 million from the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) to provide much needed repairs and improvements to Central Avenue from Broadway to Walden Avenue. This Central Avenue Improvement Project includes a complete repaving of the street, repainted bike lanes, and repairs and accessibility updates to the sidewalks to keep the Village of Lancaster walkable. In addition, the sidewalks along Central Avenue in the Village’s downtown are getting a complete facelift. The high-maintenance brickwork will be replaced with exposed aggregate concrete to match the sidewalks on the Village’s newly extended West Main Street. Finally, the parking lot across from 39 Central Avenue will be transformed into a “mobility hub” to accommodate all modes of transportation in the Village of Lancaster!

Our Vision for Central Ave

As with the West Main Street project, this Central Avenue Improvement Project conforms to and builds upon the Village of Lancaster’s vision of a vibrant, mixed-use Central Business District. This public investment will continue to establish the Village as a destination that encourages a “Shop, Stroll, Stay” experience.

  • The street resurfacing, bike lanes, and sidewalk improvements conform to the Village’s Complete Streets Policy by ensuring Central Avenue is safe and accessible for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.
  • The streetscape improvements, or facelift, will extend the Village of Lancaster’s downtown character from Broadway to beyond the roundabouts, enhancing and encouraging the walkable character of the Village. These improvements will make the sidewalks in the Village core both safer and easier to maintain.
  • The Village is committed to accommodating a variety of transportation methods for its residents and visitors with the creation of a 21st century mobility hub. This multi-use space provides parking and EV charging for vehicles, bike racks and a repair station for cyclists, benches and shelters for pedestrians, and NFTA bus stops.

Mobility Hub – What is it?

The Village of Lancaster Mobility Hub will provide a centralized location and access to different transportation options. As development continues in the Village, the need for well-organized, efficient transportation options is growing.

This project will include upgrades to the existing parking lot to improve layout, safety, and overall functionality. Enhancements will include a bus shelter, EV charging stations, better lighting, new sidewalks for safer pedestrian access, and landscaping to create a more attractive and welcoming space.

The mobility hub will make it easier for residents and visitors to get around the Village without relying solely on personal vehicles. By bringing together options like walking, bicycling, and public transit, the hub will support safer, more convenient travel both within the Village and to nearby destinations.
